Fabric Wristlet Keychain DIY

Let’s go through this fabric wristlet keychain DIY. I am making 9-10 of these for Christmas presents. Follow these instructions to make your own. They can be gifted to adults and kids both, You can use fabric scraps to make these, but you will need to purchase some swivel clasp hooks with a 1″ d-ring.

Press

Put wrong sides together on the long edge. Press in half.

Fold each side to the center fold and press again.

Then fold those edges together and give it one final press. (encasing the raw edges)

Slide the swivel clasp hook with 1″ d-ring onto the pressed fabric.

Add a sewing clip on either side of the clasp.

Next, you will pull the short ends together (right sides together) and unfold the ends.

Add some sewing clips.

Stitch a 3/8″ seam on those short ends. Be sure and backstitch at the beginning and the end. Make sure you have a denim needle in your sewing machine.

Finger press the seam open. I received a tip on my YouTube video that if you will trim the seam before you refold it, that it will make it less bulky. Great tip. Ima try it!

I recommend for you to remove the extension table on your sewing machine.

Fit the ring over the arm of the sewing machine.

Sew 1/8″ from the open edge starting at the seam line, removing the clips or pins as you go. Just keep sliding the clasp around the fabric as you sew. Sew a 1/8″ seam on the other edge also.

Where the seam allowance is, it’s thicker right there. Fold the ring 3/4″ down. That will get rid of the thickness. Slide the D-ring to that point.

Sew 1/4″ away from the seam. One is above the seam and one is below the seam. I lowered the presser foot close to the d-ring and moved my needle over to sew. It is very thick right there so sew slow. I may or may not have bend two needles on some of the fabric I used, and locked my machine down. Yikes. You can also use a zipper foot if you prefer.

You could use a quality cotton fabric. If you do, you need to add a 3/4″ piece of batting in the center when pressing. The batting would be 13″ x 3/4″. Move the batting aside when sewing the seam. Continue from there.

Tips

I heard a tip – that it helps to scotch guard them before use.

Lanyard

You can make a lanyard this exact same way.

Just cut your piece of fabric 3 3/4″ x 38″.

Follow all the same directions.

Happy Sewing my friend!
